Gene was born in Hayward, California in '96. Even in his early days, he was always a creative person. In fact, when he was only three years old, people would to compare his works to the likes of Jackson Pallock and Wassily Kandinsky, both of which are renowned artists.
Gene was raised by two loving parents and is the eldest of two brothers. Although he was a fine kid growing up, he was suspended from school in his primary years for creating a masterpiece that showcased a penis on a male figure. Fortunately, this didn't stop his artistic drive and creativity because the following year he won first place in a coloring contest. His drawing consisted of concentric geometric shapes in different color pens and were drawn into the lines of the coloring page that had been judged.
In middle school, he took his first formal art class. Luckily, he had the same teacher for three semesters between 7th and 8th grade. It was during these years that he worked on learning perspective and color theory, which was fundamental to his growth as an artist. When he graduated middle school, Gene was awarded Male Athlete Of the Year.
Gene had a trusty Canon Powershot SD800 for a few years. In 2009, he received his first DSLR camera, which was a major upgrade. During this time, he focused his energy on sports photography since that is what occupied most of his free time. He enjoyed photographing his brother and teammates playing soccer, wrestling, track & field, and football. Shooting sports photography is where Gene gained a lot of experience in taking pictures with natural light. He also became experienced with shutter speed, aperture control, and doing some fun things with flash. He kept his DSLR camera around for a while until unfortunately, someone stole it while enjoying a tasty lunch in San Fransisco. When he returned to his car, he found the window to his Honda smashed. The trunk was wide open and all of belongings were gone. After that, he really didn't put a lot of energy into photography. During his hiatus, Gene worked on a lot of cars, dabbled in painting, and stocked up on art supplies. His interest in photography was peaked once again in high school due to being enrolled in a photography class. In this class he became educated in studio photography, zoom photography, Adobe Photoshop, graphic deign, and all of the intricacies on how light works.
During his college years, he rarely picked up a camera besides the one on his phone. Despite not using a regular camera, he took the strangest and most thought provoking photos of everyday life. He thinks this is partially due to being a psychology major and being preoccupied learning about the inner workings of the human brain and psyche. Taking these pictures on his phone allowed him to gain experience in knowing how to utilize phone camera settings to get the best photos possible.
